Salsa. Yummy Salsa

Today, I'm doing some preparing for a barbeque we're having tomorrow night for DR's 18th birthday.

How did my boy get to be 18? Anyone??

This book has become my best buddy...

And this page would make the book worthwhile on its own.

I'd never made it before, so yesterday I made a wee sample of it, just to see what it was like.

Here are the ingredients, chopped up and ready for mixing: tomatoes, onion, chilli and coriander. I added some lime juice and a little salt (as the recipe asked for).

I don't think I'll add the salt in tomorrow's bowl, or if I do, it'll be just a touch. When I ate it with crisps, I felt it could have done with being less salty.

I was eating it with Pringles, so I did have to check again and again and, er, again. Just to make sure it was okay. It's so easy to convince yourself you're eating healthily when you have a bowl of salsa in front of you. The fact that every little teaspoonful is going down the hatch with a Pringle becomes irrelevant, don't you think.

The book is also useful for...

... this page!

This is the most used page in the book. I've lost count of the number of times I've made the Chocolate Sheet Cake. I normally used 'Catherine's chocolate icing' mind you, so I haven't tried the frosting in the book yet. If and when I do, it'll be without the nuts, or nobody here would eat it.

As for the cake... It gets devoured every time it's made, and it's the easiest thing ever. Give it a try. Your taste buds will thank you for it.

Your waistline? Well, that's another story, methinks.

  1. Really, that is an awesome book. It just makes you want to cook, and who cares if you gain weight. I don't know of a single recipe in the whole book that isn't good.
I think if you used something different from pringles the sasla would taste different. :)
Have fun and have a lovely 18th birthday for your son. I have one that turned 18 this year too.

  2. Homemade salsa is what a garden is intended for over here. We have our onions and tomatoes nearly ready to harvest. Thanks for mentioning the chocolate sheet cake. I am having a child's picnic this week and that will be a great dessert.

We love our salsa on a fish taco!

  3. Yummy fresh salsa! Delicious!
As for 18 year old sons....wow...I have one too, and don't know how it happened so quickly. We'll be celebrating his graduation on Saturday w/ ice cream.....lots of ice cream....your salsa is definately a healthier choice! (Though I imagine there is some sugar on your menu as well!)
Have a lovely barbecue and Happy Birthday to your (eversoquicklygrowing) boy...young man....son! (I have to say son...though I'm sure he's a man....I'm not quite ready to make that transition yet for my own....personofthesameage.
