Weather Update

Since moving to Aberdeenshire, my mum and I tend to text each other daily with a local weather report. I have to be honest, most of the conversations go something like this:

Mum: What's your weather like today? Very windy here, and wet.

Me: Lovely here. No rain, and we never have wind!

Mum: I don't think I believe you. You still live in Scotland, don't you?

Me: Not sure. They claim it's Scotland, but feels like a million miles away ;)

And so goes our daily weather-related chat. But in the past week or so, the weather around Aberdeenshire has been wet. Exceptionally wet. We are very, very fortunate to live high up, close to Bennachie, but some folks in the nearby Inverurie and Kintore have had a really rough time, with flooded houses and businesses.

The road leading up to the cottage in which we're living had fast-flowing streams rushing down it. The water washed away the surface (small) stones, and most of it now is down to the hard rock. It's like the surface of the moon in parts!

Fortunately, the Builder was able to make drains and flow water away from the hotel. Yes, there was a lot of surface water in the surrounding area, but at least the buildings were safe.

I took this on the drive in to Inverurie, which is about five miles from where we are. This was Thursday, and the rain was still lashing down at this point. The water you see in these fields isn't a river or a loch - it's simply flooded fields! Thankfully, all the farmer's homes and their livestock were, as far as I could tell, safe from the flooding.

And this was when I was driving home. It was 3:10pm, but was dark enough to make it seem like early evening.

I know we get dark early here in the North of Scotland, but on that day last week, it really did feel like it stayed at early dawn light until it was time for dusk light.

BUT ... what a difference a day makes!

Katie and I nipped in to Inverurie on the following day. The waters were still high, but the sky was blue and there was hope that the waters would keep receding.

The River Don has burst its banks, hence this riverside bench looking rather lonely and forlorn. And wet.

Hopefully, it will not be too long until it's once again being used by sitters, enjoying the peace that comes from sitting by a gently flowing river.

On the other bank, I noticed this sign:

Not being familiar with this part of Inverurie, I asked a man standing alongside me if this was indeed a playing field. 'Yes', he answered. 'It's our football park!'

As I headed back to the car, in which sat the ever-patient Katie (ahem), I snapped this scene. It's funny how water draws us, even when the water is where it shouldn't be.

Thankfully, despite the rainfall and the flooding in places, there was no loss of life. That is the most important thing of all.

Just before I close this post, I'm going to show you a couple of photos of the estate, just so you can see the difference between 'us and them'. These photos were taken on the same day as the last ones (above).

It's so beautiful around here, and we seem to get the best of all the weather. Less rain than others. Definitely less flooding. Barely any wind. Snow, when no one else has it!

I'll tell y'all what: I'll make another blog post tomorrow, showing y'all some of the photos I took around the estate last Friday. Some things are too lovely to keep hidden, eh?

Sunshine, blue skies, and Warmth :)

What a cracking day we had today on the croft.

Sunshine all day.

A very light breeze.

Warmth.

Did y'all get that? It was warm, warm, warm. We reached around 70F, which doesn't seem a lot to most of you folks, but it was heady heights for me, I can tell you.

In the morning, I lifted these:

I think there were eight of them, and inside each of these ...

was one of those.

Did I mention that we had blue skies all day?

Katie was busy mowing most of the day, and the Wee Guy was sorting the stuff in the trailer.

See .... blue skies.

Did I mention that before?

Back to the plot ...

I weeded the carrot and parsnip patch yesterday. I ought to have taken a before photo, though I may have been too ashamed to show y'all. Suffice to say: It was horrendous. Thankfully, it is now weed free.

The parsnips are in the two rows to the left, and the other rows are carrots.

And then the sun went down.

Peaceful - that's the best description of this evening. As I stood at the back door taking this photo, I could hear the rumble of the sea, but apart from the ocean, there was not another sound to be heard.

And now we look forward to our gift of the Lord's Day: our day of rest from our weekly toils, blessed as they are; a day to focus on the worship of our Lord.

I may listen to this sermon tomorrow morning before we go to church: Not a bone of His was broken. I don't know anything about this preacher, but I do enjoy sermons on Old Testament prophecies being fulfilled in Christ, and I came across this on the Sermon Audio site.

Hope y'all have a wonderful Lord's Day tomorrow.

Night night

Our First Snow

This is what we woke to this morning.

Simply lovely...

Katie and Calum went for a little stroll in the road.

Everything looks so lovely in the snow, don't you think?

This is not the tracks of a car losing its way, but the footprints of my kiddos....

This fella absolutely loves the snow...

This is his first meeting with the white stuff, and when the Builder opened the back door for him today, he really didn't know what to make of it. He crept along the few inches of pavement right up against the wall of the house - the only black part! But, by the time Katie and Calum had him outside, he loved it so much he wouldn't come back in for them!

He was having so much fun. Let's hope this isn't gonna be our snow quota for the year.

Blue skies...

I just got a Facebook notification saying:

Katie just added a photo of you.

And so I went to look at what masterpiece she'd unearthed and posted on the dreaded Facebook.

This is the photo...

Er... am I missing something?

As Jackson and I went for our morning stroll today, and watched the sun rise behind the mainland hills...

Let's just stop right there. Doesn't that sound good?

Me. Walking. Morning.

Let's just dwell on these three words for a moment, realising they were placed, correctly, in one sentence.

And now I can't remember why I began the sentence in the first place. No matter: it was worth putting in just for me to emphasize these three words.

Talking of the sunrise, if you head over to Eoropie Tearoom's Facebook page, you can watch a video of that very sun rising, this very morning.

Have you watched it? See the mainland hills? Nice.

I reckon if any future tourists are planning on visiting Lewis, they might think of booking a November holiday. These past few days have been as bonny as any days we've had all year. Last year, around this time, we took OMSH on a tour of our local sights.

We showed him the lighthouse,

and Port Beach

The skies were blue that day too. And that was November. So... mark my words - you wanna see our island bathed in sunshine, visit in November.

The Tourist Board ought to pay me for my in-depth studies into weather patterns on the island. Just sayin'

Just another Monday...

I had just managed to get a load of washing in when a hail shower arrived. They were the size of golf balls.

No kidding.

Well, maybe that's somewhat of an exaggeration. But they sounded that big against our upstairs velux window.

The Wee Guy said to me yesterday:

'Mum, if we get maybe four or five chickens.... We'll get a rooster, put the chickens to the rooster, so next year we'll have loads of chickens'.

I love the "we'll put the chickens to the rooster" phrase. Methinks he's spending too much time talking of 'sheep to the ram'....

And talking of rams...

Our new ram (do you like the 'our'? Ahem...) Big Brother's new ram is a beauty. The Wee Guy told me that too. He's huge. His back is sooooo long.

Oh well, that's all the matters, then.

Here he is meeting the Builder. He's such a friendly chap, I'm slightly concerned that his name will be more B Forsyth than B Willis.

Nice to see you, to see you.... Nice!

He wanted to come right up to the camera and say Hi.

Hiya buddy. I think I'm gonna like you. You mustn't tell Mr Wayne, but I reckon you and I are gonna be better buddies than he and I ever were.

Yep, we'll be seeing a lot more of this fella over the next while, methinks.

Topsy-Turvy

Okay, something's not just as it ought to be...

This is www.xcweather.co.uk today.

Er, will y'all have a look at the wind arrows. The red means strong winds, and what is mind-boggling is the dainty, little, blue arrow sitting on our island.

It was worth hanging onto this image.

Something else is not as it ought to be:

A Swede.
We reckon this may be clubroot. If it is, it's bad.
Real bad. (That has got to be said in an American accent, because if it's said in my accent, it just sounds like bad grammar. Which is it.)

Winds and Woes

50mph winds. Temperatures not getting out of the 40s. Rain pelting down.

Oh well, this is life in Lewis for the past couple of weeks.

My poor, poor vegetables.

This photo was taken out the Family Room window the other day. And very often in Lewis, May can be give us the best weather of the summer. Let's hope that's not gonna be the case this year.

Anyway, never mind the weather, girls...

Here are Catherine and Calum feeding a couple of lambs in the barn. Aren't they lovely.
And the lambs aren't too bad looking either!

Lest any of you were wondering why I'd married the Builder... this week, he built another wee greenhouse for me - all from recycled materials. Hey, I'll have the Greens on-side yet...

Even the perspex roof was something he was re-using.
We carried this roof from the garage to the greenhouse in 50mph winds. I'm no kidding. It was blowing a hoolie, and the Builder and Big Brother had the task planned with military precision.

Sadly, they didn't take into account that if I ever have to be very, very serious, I always have one reaction. I laugh. Thankfully, even whilst laughing, I'm able to hold perspex roofs in place. I'm a woman. I multitask.

I do feel bad moaning about the weather when so many people have had their lives, their livelihoods, and their families devastated by tornadoes. My greatest worry is my cauliflower and that makes my moaning very pathetic.

I hope you all have a great weekend, and remember to enter the Giveaway if you haven't already.

What?! You Didn't Miss Me....?

It's okay. I'm here.

What do you mean you didn't know I was MIA?

What do you mean you didn't miss me?

Well, I was missing, and this is why:

We've had no electricity since about 9pm last night, until now.

And - wait for this - we had no broadband for even longer.

Exciting?

Maybe....for about 10 minutes. After that, I want the kettle to boil for my cuppa; I want the heating to come on; I want, I want, I want....

I now don't want to sound like a spoilt 21st Century softie.

Our winds reached over 100mph. 104mph to be precise. And then the electricity went off, so our local weather station's windometer stopped registering.

I haven't a clue what the instrument is called, but you know what I mean....a speedometer for wind. Feel free to insert your own word here.

For one of the first times ever I wanted to live in a city. I wanted our house to be surrounded by other buildings. I thought we must have been nuts to have built where we did. And I realised why I'd never got around to planting anything in our garden.

Oh, and here's another reason the garden's not worth bothering about...

Yes, this is right in front of my family room window this morning.

Why would I bother with garden flowers and bushes....?

Casting Long Shadows

I took this photo at midday on Saturday.

We had snow!

We had sunshine!

We also had long shadows. Even at midday, the house shadow is long. You see, up here in the Arctic Circle Isle of Lewis, the climate was made for winter hibernation. I reckon we'd function well for the other three seasons of the year if we got to hibernate all winter.

Our energy would be high come Spring. We'd be off with a spring in our step and a song on our lips. The sun would be shining; the cute lambs would be appearing; Mr Wayne would have stopped his wallowing. All would be well.

But, as it is, we don't hibernate. We don't catch up on lost sleep. We don't lose our excess fat.

If we had any. Which, of course, we, well, er....

Where were we? Yes, shadows and sheep.

Look at them all in a line.

'Let's form an orderly queue, please.'

'Baa, uhhh... why are you in this queue?'

'Duh. Isn't it obvious. Cos the one in front of me is in it'

'Er, and why is she in it?'

'Cos the one in front of her is. Don't be so stupid. Join the queue like everyone else.'

Lunar Eclipse - Eclipsed by Cloud

Yesterday morning, there was a lunar eclipse?

Did any of you manage to see it? We saw until about half way, and then cloud came rolling in. What a disappointment.

This morning we have a clear view of the moon.

Why could the clouds not have obliged yesterday?

Weather and Tearooms

Eoropie Tearoom posted this on their Facebook page:

Shipping forecast: Issued 0505 UTC Sun 07 Nov. Wind, southwest 4 or 5; backing southeast 7 to severe gale 9, occasionally storm 10 for a time later, then becoming cyclonic.

Yep, we had winds up to 80mph; temperatures of between 4 and 6 degrees Celsius with a windchill factor of -10. Yes, that's minus 10!

The weather page at Eoropaidh Tearoom's website gives an accurate as-it-happens account of our weather. It's stationed just across the machair from us, so the weather they show is exactly what we have here outside our door.

Er, there's an outside-of-our-door?

Really?!

It wont be seeing much of me for the next while.

If you go to the Tearoom's site, have a look at the cakes Mrs Eoropie Tearoom makes.

Did you look?

Fab, eh?
