Good Morning, Sun

This morning's sunrise...

This is looking over Lionel and across the Minch, with the mainland hills seen in the background.

The later sunrise means that it's possible for me to actually see the sun rising in the mornings. This was taken around 6.30am, so it really feels like the nights are becoming longer - at both ends of the day.

These two photos were taken within seconds of each other, with this one giving a wider scope. The outline of some of the Knockaird houses can be seen at the left side of the photo. But here's my question: Why are the colours so different in these photos? Is it because the flash was used in one, and not in the other? I do know that the flash was definitely used in some of the photos, and not in others, but which is which? And why?

Please let this ignoramus know...

  1. hey, I don't care - they are BOTH stunning, and I am jealous - we just don't get to see vistas like that! :-( Too many houses in the way.

  4. My guess is the first one had the flash go off. The second shot looks more like the natural flow of light. The camera more than likely picked up too much light when it took the second shot. But, I know nothing. All I know is those shots are beautiful and you are blessed to be continuously surrounded by God's beauty.

  6. I can't help you with the flash question - I take a lot of photos, but I am sadly ignorant about such things. BUT, I can thank you for sharing your beautiful sunrises with us. I'm pretty sure I've NEVER heard of your part of the world being touted as the place where people go to see sunrises and sunsets (Key West DOES come to mind!) but people should be going there - people in droves! I guess God gives each place their own special look into heaven and you just shared it with all of us - God Bless!

  8. Gorgeous!

To me the colors don't look that different at all. Because the second one includes all the purple it may produce an optical illusion, making the reds and oranges hit the eye differently. If you cover up the purple, the reds and oranges look pretty much the same in both, just the broadness and narrowness of the color bands is different because one is more zoomed in.

    Phew, that was long.

Then there's always the chance that I'm colorblind. :)

  11. WOW! Thank you for sharing. It's not houses, but trees that block any view of sunsets and sunrises for me.

  12. Gorgeous photos. I think the first one is my favourite with all the orange and yellow. I suppose it started raining shortly after you took them!

The flash depends on the amount of light being let in to the camera for each shot - which will depend on how much zoom you are using. Not claiming to be an expert but I think that's how it works. I quite like manually working the flash and seeing what different effects I can get depending on the natural light available.

  13. Leah, I think you're right. I think they're the same, but more of the sky in one...
Actually, just read Leah's comment - makes more sense than this!
