This Past Week ...

This past week has been, erm, interesting.

Not, of course, that my interesting will necessarily be your interesting. But the nature of blogging is that we, as bloggers, ramble on regardless.

On Tuesday morning, our dear, dear friends left us once again for their mainland home. Alex and Elsie have been coming to our communion weekend for a number of years, and our pleasure at having them increases every time. (If you don't know how we first met, you'll find the story in this post.)

We'd had such a lovely time of worship after breakfast that morning. We sang Psalm 84 - always lovely - and Alex read Isaiah 58: 6-14. The words meant so much to me, as did Alex's beautiful and heartfelt prayer at the end.

Oh, what a joy to spend time with our brothers and sisters in Christ! What a joy Heaven will be when we never have to say Goodbye!

The sign says Welcome, but we were, of course, saying our Goodbyes. This time was different from their previous departures from our home in that we realise this may be their last time here. Of course, we're glad that we will - all being well - see more of them when we move to the mainland, but nevertheless, there is a poignancy to seeing them leave this home, in which so many wonderful memories have been made, for the last time.

Late one afternoon last week, we had a a knock at the door, resulting in our first viewers! This couple - she has local connections; he now has work on the island - had been told this house would soon be on the market, so she knocked on the door to ask if, indeed, that was the case. We spoke and then I asked her for 20 minutes, at which time her and her husband could have a look round.

Oh yes, I did need these 20 minutes! And it's amazing how tidy one can make a house look in that space of time. I really must practice this more often - not just when viewers come around, but all the time. A tidy house is both welcoming and relaxing, don't you think?

After they left, I took some photos of all the rooms. I know that photos show up things that the naked eye (at least the untrained eye) doesn't catch. And, sure enough, many of the rooms have little bits and bobs I'd change before displaying photos on an official 'For Sale' site. The house will 'officially' be for sale in a couple of weeks' time.

Here is the Guest Bedroom ...

What do you notice? What would you change? What would you add? Give me all the tips you can think of, please.

And here is the Hall, taken from the front door. Again ... whatcha'll reckon?

And the kitchen. I was having a laugh with the couple who came to see it, admitting that there was no smell of freshly ground coffee, no bread baking in the oven, giving off that welcoming aroma that would entice prospective buyers! Twenty minutes was useful, but not long enough for that!

The Family Room is what it is. I love this room. It's relaxing, it's comfortable, it's FULL of memories. It's also full of books, which makes my heart sing a little, but when I saw the photo, I realised that the books look untidy. They don't - in a photo - do for me what they do in real life.

Does that make sense?

What do you think? Honesty, please ... remember, you're helping me :)

This week, too, was the week in which I finished our lovely sponsored girl's blanket. It's so unusual to be able to send anything like this to India, but in God's providence, a team are heading out from England to Compassion's headquarters in India next week, and they said they were able to take it out with them and see that my dear wee girl gets it.

It's such a blessing to sponsor a child. If you don't already, please consider doing it.

Compassion (I know there are others too, including an American Compassion) do such an amazing work, and the stories adults, who were once sponsored children, are able to tell of what their education allowed them to do are so inspiring.

How can I leave the week without giving you some evidence of our changed weather!

Our mornings have been breathtakingly beautiful. When I open a window, or open the back door, and the only sounds I hear and the skylarks and the sound of the sea (so beautifully termed in Gaelic: Ceòl na mara - and what an apt term, because it really is music to my ears).

There is such peace and joy flowing from sitting in silence, looking at this scene, before the busy-ness of the day descends.

Later in the day, the colours are much more vivid,

and then, even later in the day ...

new colours delight our senses.

Yes, my fairly constant stream of sunset photos has begun ... And how my kids know it!

Another Job off the To-do List

Why are The Boys so interested in this lorry?

Ah yes, it's because it's heading our way.

...right to my front door. We've only been in the house for six years, so you couldn't expect pavements to have been done before now, would you?

You would?

They Guys all worked like a well-oiled machine, all of them doing their own jobs. Concrete was poured, then spread, and then the screeding was done - that's what The Builder is doing here.

The back of the house, and the boys are on the home straight.

But I see a lot of banter and blethering going on here, whilst we (notice the 'we' again) still have work to be done.

Thankfully, we have someone who doesn't leave the job until it's done.

Yep, the Wee Guy carried on,

and on,

and on....

until his job was done.

Apparently, the drying cement gets swept to give it 'brush lines'.

Some of our smiling squad.

...and washed wheelbarrows.

This is a 'major' one off The Builder's To-do list. Sadly, my list of To-dos just keeps growing and growing.

Just Life Here at Home

The Wee Guy is on his break. He has finished his Maths and headed out the door, shouting as he went: "Can't you see the fear in the eyes of the British Redcoats?".

"Oi!", I call, "You are British!".

"But today, I am fighting for freedom!".

You know what? I reckon that boy is learning right enough.

I'm just not sure our guys have quite made up their minds as to where their hearts are.

...British?

...or across the Pond??

For lunch today, we're having Courgette soup, made last summer when our courgettes were coming thick and fast. All the veg that were made into soups in late summer and in the autumn are now being appreciated by all.... (well, by me in particular, because I am enjoying them without having to make them). Soups in the freezer are the best thing ever.

When we go from this...

to this ...

and then to soup on our plates... Yep, it makes the work worthwhile

This morning, we read this in Jeremiah:

"Seekest thou great things for thyself? Seek them not." Jer 45:5

... I thought they were striking words.

Before and After

How's this for a before....

(one of the Utility Room cupboards after emptying the shelves)

....and after

Dearie me, I've never had cleaner and tidier cupboards in my life!

The strange thing is that last Monday, I decided I would definitely have a total clean-out of all the Utility Room cupboards.

I guess I can place a tick on my to-do list.

Done.

(Just don't wait until a fire makes it a necessity next time, Anne)

A Glimpse into my Afternoon

No time to write much just now, but these photos show the events at our house this afternoon.

Looks like nothing?

Now you see why they're here...

We discovered a fire in the garage, against the wall that backs onto our Utility Room.

It seems as if an electrical fault in one of our freezers was the cause.

I was so thankful that we have a local fire crew. They were at our home 16 minutes after our 999 call.

And here is the inside of our garage now.

I can't write too much just now. We are having dinner at my sister-in-laws. I could write and write about the number of causes for thankfulness I have. There are so many, and I will write as soon as I can.

The Wee Guy

Not that we ever would let our Wee Guy drive the tractor, but if we did, maybe this is what he'd look like.

Not that we ever would, you understand.

Ahem, this was our 'garden' today after the grass had been cut. Can y'all imagine just how long the grass was for there to be so many piles of cuttings? Hmmm, let's just say it was in dire need of a haircut, and it went from having a leather-jacket-clad-biker haircut to a US Marine's #1 in the space of a few hours. Phew!

I haven't shown you a sunset for a while, so here's tonight's.

Time for bed, and boy, am I glad!

Why Me??

Do you guys know what this combination of items is?

I reckon most mums don't have to come across this in their house. It just has to be me.

If you're lost, I'll give you a clue: there is a blue wall tack with some white paint on the top. It's stuck into a .... a.... thing.

If you don't know what it is, then put your feet up, have a coffee, and be glad that you are a townie.

An Award, pour moi, and Random Facts

Kirsteen, at Life in a Household of Boys passed this award onto me.

Stylish.

Me.

Let's put them together: Stylish. Me.

I'm trying....really, I'm trying to find the connection between these two words. I'm failing. But, Kirsteen, I really appreciate the award.

I am to find some random facts to go with the award, but, as I am kind of random in general, I am able to give you one of my normal posts.

1. Sometimes I get asked why I homeschool. Of course there are many deep and meaningful reasons, but yesterday when the Wee Guy was doing his subtractions, he looked up from the page, and simply said, 'Mum, I love you'. He then carried on with his Maths as though this was the most normal thing in the world to do whilst doing Maths.

Do I only homeschool to have that sweet little mouth say these things to me out of the blue? No.

Do they make every second of it worthwhile? You better believe it.

wild flowers he picked yesterday afternoon for me

2. Does this fella...
...look well to you?

This little  baby has been so unwell this week. I mean seriously unwell. He spent two days in Intensive Care at the vet's (They don't really call it Intensive Care, but it was intensive, and it was care).

He had a serious bacterial infection. I don't want to be gross here, but it was eating away at the lining of his gut. He was keeping no foods nor fluids in his stomach, and as well as his food and drink, a lot of blood was coming out both ends too. By the time we got him to the vet, he was seriously dehydrated, as well as seriously ill. He spent two days on a drip, is still on antibiotics, and on a special diet, but has improved hugely.

Oh boy, it is not pleasant watching your puppy suffering. Not pleasant at all. 'Mammy's heart was sore, wasn't it, Jackson, and there was nothing she could do for you.'

3. We had almost two weeks of sunshine. We had some rain yesterday and today, but this evening is beautifully sunny again. I can assure you that this weather fact is worth mentioning.

4. The Builder and co were getting a couple of strainers into the ground today, ready to fence off our vegetable plot.

The hole for the strainer is deep...

...and the strainer is huge

...much huger than what we see above ground...

I had no idea there was so much underground. Then again, I don't have much idea about anything on the croft. C'est la vie.

Er, I don't think they're straight, mate.

Are they...

Oh, maybe they are. I think it's me that was not quite right.

5. I couldn't post without mentioning my veggies.

I took a note today of the specific varieties of brasiccas I'd planted, because some - like the brocolli in this photo - did really well. Every seed I planted sprouted....

...whilst others - like this variety of cauliflower - had a very poor success rate. I have other cauliflower seedlings, so it's okay, but I wanted to take note of the name and make of seed, so I wouldn't go for them again.

Here is the tray of Romanesco. They had a high success rate too. Let's hope they're just as successful when they actually get into the ground.

Well, there are my five random bits of news.

But you didn't really think you were gonna get off without a sunset, did you?

Two nights ago, with my washing line in the foreground.

Nice touch, I thought.

(I didn't really.)

This was from two nights ago. As I write this - at 8.30pm - it's broad daylight outside. It feels like only a couple of weeks ago when the sun was setting mid-afternoon. And here we are with daylight almost until we go to bed.

"While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease." Genesis 8:22
